The story of David and Goliath has been read, studied in the Bible, and told over and over by many people throughout the world and ages. However, the spiritual or metaphysical principles laid down therein have not been fully understood. The metaphysical principles of adversity, fear, doubt, faith, conquering, courage, success, failure, etc., are the essence of this story.
This story metaphorically has inspired many, but few understand the principles contained within for they explain the eternal purpose, pattern, and plan of Yahweh Elohim, as He is operating within mans mind or soul. This is part one of a two part series on adversity which brings out the purpose of the devil or negative attributes. This series will summarize the necessity of adversity, illustrate that it is a principle, and show its operation according to the divine purpose to manifest both faith or doubt.
Life is full of adversities.
Now every man, woman, or child upon the face of the earth has encountered the principles of David and Goliath in their lives where adversity brings about success or failure. Life itself in this realm can be defined as a series of adversities or Goliaths that must be overcome and by which all are tested. Many have been slain or conquered by Goliath (adversity), and paralyzed by fear on a 3-fold level, 1. spiritual, 2. mental, and 3. physical, which resulted in their life or mind being immersed in despair, deprivation, self-pity, and hopelessness. "If thou faint in the day of adversity, they strength is small. (Prov. 24:10)." Many are full of despondency, dread, and indecision, as King Saul and the army of Israel were when the giant Goliath challenged them.
Adversities make us aware of our insufficiencies.
Yet there is a positive side to adversity. Adversity is especially advantageous because it shows us our inadequacies or imperfections. It is a very sobering and humbling experience or a deflator of our ego (Eccl. 7:14). The word humble is defined in Websters New World Dictionary as "being conscious of our own insufficiencies and shortcomings." Being cognizant of our deficiencies should cause us to examine and assess ourselves to make the necessary changes that strengthen us spiritually and psychologically. Thus adversity is absolutely necessary for our personal growth and development. For example, the Children of Israel left Egypt with much substance or they were greatly strengthened spiritually and psychologically by experiencing and witnessing Yahweh overcome the heavy burdens of Pharaoh in Egypt. Their resurrection over adversity resulted in them obtaining faith and confidence in their redeemer (2 Sam. 4:9; I Sam. 10:19).
The body is affected by how we react to adversities.
King Solomon wrote thousands of years ago, before modern science, psychology, and the knowledge of the physical body, ... as a man thinketh, so is he (Pro. 23:7). It should come as no surprise to anyone, especially medical science with all its technological innovations, that if our minds and souls are brimming with negative principles, our health, in general, will deteriorate and disease will be rampant in the world today. The streets, alleys, Skid Row, and mental institutions throughout the earth plane are crowded with those slain by the Goliath of hopelessness. Man-made philosophies, dogmas, and religions stultified with ceremonies, rituals, and traditions have been unable to and have languished in dealing with this problem. They have failed to instill in the minds of the masses, a knowledge of the principle of faith in the Creator within them.
The whole world is in a dilemma about how to overcome adversity. To ease these psychological pains, drugs (legal and illegal) and alcohol are used in epidemic proportions throughout the earth plane to deaden the effects of these negative attributes and failures. Some have even taken so-called mind altering drugs, such as LSD, peyote, etc., thinking, believing, and teaching the delusion that these drugs will expand their consciousness.
PLIM has remained hidden from the masses.
Mankind is totally ignorant and oblivious of the inward power latent within us, PLIM, (Col. 1:26-28) to overcome those psychological Goliaths. PLIM becomes effectual only by using the invisible principle of "faith" in the Holy Spirit (Yahshua the Messiah) within our mind.
Only a remnant have been successful in resurrecting over Goliath on a physical and mental level by exercising this principle of faith, even though they are ignorant of its true spiritual reality and operation by the divine tabernacle pattern. Let us begin to examine the metaphysical principles of this story by the pattern.
Traditionally David and Goliath are interpreted on a material and physical level.
Those that have read the story of David and Goliath interpret it metaphorically and symbolically on a material or physical level. Most people internalize the story and associate it with their individual experiences in life. They perceive David as an individual overcoming some physical adversity, which is symbolically represented as Goliath. Most do not realize or understand that this is a spiritual principle in operation.
All students of the scriptures must understand that the physical or natural things (places, people, and events, occurring in the scriptures) are nothing but types and shadows of spiritual principles. The apostle Paul said, Because that which may be known of God is manifest in them; for God hath shewed it unto them. For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse: (Rom. 1:19-20)
A spiritual principle cant be understood without manifestations.
Spiritual principles are abstract, something not easily understood, and not part of the concrete existence. Since an abstract, spiritual principle cannot be detected with our five senses, we must set certain premises or axioms that serve as a basis or foundation for this scientific investigation. The student of metaphysics or spiritual principles must understand that Our Heavenly Father Yahweh in the Pure Spirit state is the Principle or the All in All.
The principles or attributes of Yahweh are impossible to perceive in their pure ontological state of existence with the minds eye or through the physical senses. For example, no one has observed the principles or attributes of Faith, Intelligence, Knowledge, Wisdom, Beauty, Love, Justice, Foundation, Power, Strength, Kingdom, etc., in their pure ontological state, for they have no shape or form. Just as in the beginning of the creation of heaven and earth, Moses described the earth without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep... (Gen. 1:2)."
It was only after Elohim spoke to this parent mass and it took on the form of plants, sea life, and animals, that Moses understood how the creation came to be. Further proof in the physical realm verifies this. For all life begins as an egg or a seed that has no shape and form. Nothing can be said about its sex, color, size, etc., until it is born and matures. After the fertilization process, the formation or gestation period of any life form is invisible and only seen with the aid of an X-ray, an ultrasound, or a microscope followed by the birthing which is seen with physical eyes.
Principles are understood by mental images, words, and actions.
Similarly, a principle can only be perceived after it is formed into some mental images within the confines of the mind (consciously or unconsciously by the Holy Spirit), and in physical manifestations, as words or actions. Thus we see two visible manifestations are needed to understand any metaphysical principle in its pure ontological state of existence, sometimes referred to as an Abstract State. They are as follows:
1) Mental Images observed with the Minds eye. The process of an image forming within the mind can be voluntarily caused by the individuals imagination or involuntarily caused by the Holy Spirit, the Higher Power. For example, dreams, visions, and revelations are seen with the minds eye.
2) Physical or material actions or words manifested and observed with the physical eyes or senses. You can observe a frown or someone sticking their tongue out with your natural eyes. This is the outward manifestation of contempt formed in the mind.
There are two states and conditions of the 3-fold Spirit.
These two manifestations of a principle can be correlated with the two witnesses or states and conditions of Yahweh Pure Spirit, the Father.
1) The Word or Son (Spiritual Form), Yahweh Elohim, is seen only in Visions and Revelations (Ex. 24:9-10; Matt. 17:1-9) within the confines of the Mind or through the minds eyes.
2) The Holy Spirit (Jn. 14:26) was the Word or Son made flesh (Jn. 1:14) in the concrete manifestation of Yahshua the Messiah observed with the physical eyes or senses.
The tabernacle pattern proves the 3-foldness of everything.
The tabernacle pattern, revealed to Moses atop Mt. Sinai by Elohim (God) transforming into the structure, consists of three compartments: 1. Most Holy Place, 2. Holy Place, 3. Court Round About; proving the three states of Spirit or the Father. In short, any metaphysical or spiritual principle is three-fold:
1) Abstract State - Invisible, Incomprehensible, and Inscrutable Principle.
2) Intermediate State - The principle takes on shape and form within the mind as a mental image.
3) Concrete State - Visible Manifestations of the principle (words or actions) are seen or observed with the physical eyes or senses.
Further proof that any metaphysical principle is three-fold can be obtained by examining the physical realm (see Diagram 1). In fact, matter is Spirit materialized, or spirit in its lowest state. An atom is the basic unit of matter, which is three-fold, by the tabernacle pattern: 1. Proton; 2. Neutron; 3. Electron. In the physical realm the three states of matter are:
1) Gaseous State - The Abstract or Invisible state of matter typifies the principle of Spirit being without form or inscrutable. This would be the conception of a principle
2) Liquid State - The Intermediate state of matter typifies the principle of Spirit taking on form or a mental image within the mind and observed with the minds eye. This would be the birthing or formation of a principle.
3) Solid State - The concrete state of matter typifies the Spirit principle manifested as physical actions or words observed by the physical senses.
For a more detailed explanation see the November/December 1992 "PLIM REPORT," "The Philosophical Measuring Rod," p. 16 and Elohim the Archetypal Pattern of the Universe, by Dr. Henry C. Kinley, "The Exegetical Analysis section, Vol. 1, p. 50.
Yahweh is not seen unless revealed in some form.
When the Children of Israel were gathered around Mt. Sinai and heard Yahweh speak from the fiery cloud, Moses wrote that they 'heard the voice' from the cloud, but 'saw no similitude' or form (Deut. 4:12). They could not perceive Spirit without some manifestation. In another instance, King Saul asked the witch of En-Dor in a seance to call up Samuels Spirit. When he appeared Saul asked her ..what form is he of? (1 Sam. 28:14). Saul knew he could not recognize Samuels Spirit unless it appeared in some familiar form.
The Messiah told the Scribes and Pharisees that they had neither heard the voice of Yahweh Elohim nor seen His form (Jn. 5:37 compare Mk. 16:12). In other words, Yahweh had not revealed Himself unto them. For a man cannot understand Spirit unless Yahweh appears in his consciousness. We only have to look into the operation of our mind to rebut any skeptics, atheists, or agnostics that doubt the power of Elohim (God) to appear in mans consciousness. Remember an idea is defined as that which exists in the mind, as a representation or mental image potentially or actually (as of something comprehended or understood); or as a formation (as a plan)." An idea is not something seen with the physical eye. Thus you have a form that is not physical. It is understood with the minds eye.
Spirit takes on form within the confines of a mans mind.
In the preceding paragraphs, we have shown and proven that a spiritual principle must materialize whereby the human mind can visualize or conceptualize it. The materialization of a metaphysical principle is always in relationship to another principle. For example, the principle of courage is defined as: the quality or state of the mind that enables one to face danger with confidence, resolution, and firm control of oneself; bravery. By definition the principle of courage is defined as the state of mind observed in the face of danger; or courage is defined in relation to the principle of adversity.
You cannot perceive courage without adversity.
The student of metaphysics understands that without the principle of adversity, the principle of courage cannot be observed. It is the principle of adversity that causes the principle of courage to be formed in the mind and then manifest as a concrete action. To those that have eyes to see, a Higher Power (Rom. 13:1) is causing the principle of courage to manifest in the light of adversity. It should be definitely understood that the individual has no power to cause himself to manifest the principle of courage. He could just as well manifest cowardliness. Likewise, the physical body has an involuntary nervous system, over which man has no power, that invokes pain or produces pleasure and controls all the necessary life functions of the body.
In summary, the principle of adversity brings out or illuminates the abstract principles of courage or cowardliness. Both are involuntary responses to the principle of adversity. Now that we understand the structure of the spiritual principles of adversity and its relationship to courage and cowardliness, let us begin to examine David and Goliath.
Spiritual principles are hidden in the characters of Saul, David, and Goliath.
The reader must keep in mind that King Saul, Goliath, Israel and David are portraying spiritual principles. This story begins in the 17th chapter of I Samuel where Israel under King Saul is at war with the Philistines whose champion warrior is Goliath of Gath. He was a giant whose height was six cubits and a span, approximately ten feet tall.
Goliath made a challenge to King Saul and Israel. He said, ... Why are ye come out to set your battle in array? am not I a Philistine, and ye servants to Saul? choose you a man for you, and let him come down to me. If he be able to fight with me, and to kill me, then will we be your servants: but if I prevail against him, and kill him, then shall ye be our servants, and serve us. And the Philistine said, I defy the armies of Israel this day; give me a man, that we may fight together (1 Sam. 17:8-10). Now when King Saul and Israel ..heard those words of the Philistine, they were dismayed, and greatly afraid (1 Sam. 17:11).
Goliaths challenge to Israel typifies negative attributes confronting a soul.
This challenge that Goliath, the Philistine champion, made to Israel has a very deep spiritual significance. The loser of this battle or confrontation would become the winners servant. Israel becoming the Philistines servants typifies a soul being enslaved to doubt, fear, hopelessness, or all negative spiritual attributes. In fact the meaning of the Hebrew words 'Goliath' and 'Philistine' convey this. Goliath, in the context it is being used, means revealing or conspicuous, as stated by Strongs Exhaustive Concordance #1555 and #1540. Now Philistine which means to deviate from the true course is derived from a root Hebrew word meaning to roll (in dust):- roll (wallow) self, as stated. #6428, 6429, and 6430 of Strongs Exhaustive Concordance. The situation of the Israelites facing Goliath was definitely a revealing process of what was in their mind and their behavior was made quite obvious or conspicuous in this light.
Adversity revealed what was really in Israel.
Israel, in Hebrew means Having Power with Elohim. Both Israel and King Saul were confronted with an overwhelming adversity or an insurmountable obstacle. Goliath the giant, brought out their lack of faith in Yahweh their Elohim, who had fought and won ALL their battles for them. Adversity manifested the principles of Fear, Doubt, Weakness, etc., (which are the Works of the Flesh, Gal 5:19-20) in the Israelites (See the Diagram). This state of mind of Israel can be correlated with hell, the grave, Sheol, or Egypt, which is the Court Round About by the pattern. The Israelites couldnt conceive in their hearts and minds an image of overcoming Goliath because they were paralyzed by fear and the outward appearance of Goliath.
What does it mean to have power with Elohim?
The Israelites didnt really understand What having Power with Elohim meant metaphysically or spiritually, for it was hidden in Yahweh. Likewise, modern man today is in the same state and condition. When man is confronted with what appears to be insurmountable adversity, he knows not why and for what purpose, or how to invoke this power to overcome the adversity (PLIM).
The power of Elohim is a principle that can only be seen or understood in relationship to the principle of adversity or resistance. Just as the principle of adversity brings to light the principle of courage and cowardliness, it also brings to light weakness and power. Thus, it is through the principle of adversity that a soul grows spiritually and psychologically and manifests the power of Elohim. An example of the power in the temple of Man (his physical body) is the muscular system. Every man knows that muscles are strengthened with power when put under stress. Weight lifting strengthens the muscles as adversity strengthens the soul (Rom. 5:1-5; James 1:2-6). We will discuss how this power is invoked in Part Two of this series by examining how David overcame Goliath.
